Dysphagia is a Common Condition in Both Young and Old

Dysphagia ( swallowing difficulty) is a very common issue for patients of every age group and their carers. There are various causes and explanations for dysphagia. Some individuals suffer from dry mouth and find taking anything difficult. For other patients the nature of their health issues can cause swallowing difficulties and some patients are simply too young to take pills and tablets in a solid form.

If you suffer from problems in swallowing or care for someone who does there’s a solution to the problems it may cause. One answer that usually comes to people’s minds is to crush tablets or pills so that they are easier to swallow. Although pill crushing might appear like a good idea there are lots of reasons why it isn’t.

One reason is many pills are sugar coated to make them taste more palatable. Crushing pills with a sugar layer will remove the coating and make them taste rather unpleasant to put it mildly. Other tablets have an enteric coating which is designed to keep the medicine together while it is inside the stomach. This can be either to guard the medicine from the stomach or vice versa. Finally if a tablet is designed to have a modified release system crushing it will cause all of the medicine to be released at the same time instead of over a longer period of time.

Fortunately there’s a solution to swallowing difficulties and dysphagia. Using liquid formulation, liquid medicine and liquid drugs has been shown to reduce the issues of dysphagia and also the medicine management problems it may cause. Liquid formulations are simple to swallow and come in several tasty flavours. They are available as a replacement for a variety of pills and tablets used to deal with many health problems.
